Math as a Prerequisite for Science and Engineering Majors

Science and engineering majors include math coursework as requirements in the major and as prerequisites to science or engineering courses. Below is a list of the WWU math prerequisite for the first course in a sequence by major.  It is highly recommended that students interested in science and engineering majors begin math and science coursework early in their academic career.  It is recommended that students register for the highest level of math they qualify for based on ALEKS Math Placement Assessment scores or transfer credit/placement information or previous math coursework at Western.  Some science courses allow a suitable Math Placement Assessment score to serve as a prerequisite.

Eligibility for science and engineering courses by major:

  • Computer Science: students are eligible for CSCI 141 (5 credits, first in a sequence) following Math 112
  • Chemistry: students are eligible for CHEM 161 (5 credits, first in a sequence) following Math 114
  • Geology: students are eligible for GEOL 211 (5 credits, first in a sequence) while enrolled in or following Math 114
  • Biology: students are eligible for BIOL 204 (5 credits, first in a sequence) following CHEM 161
  • Physics: students are eligible for PHYS 161 (5 credits, first in a sequence) while enrolled in or following Math 124
  • Engineering: students are eligible for ENGR 170 (4 credits, first in a sequence) following MATH 124 and CHEM 161
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering: students are eligible for EECE 108 and EECE 109 (1 credits each, taken concurrently, first in a sequence) following Math 125 or 138 and PHYS 162
