Math for Education

Woodring College of Education has four pathways to become a certified teacher which have different math requirements: Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Special Education and Secondary Education.

If you have done or will do any of the following, then you will likely not need to take the MPA:

  • Earn college credit in a Calculus course with a grade of C or better
  • Score a 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Calculus exam
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus II course with a grade of C or better
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus I course with a grade of C or better
  • Earn college credit in a College Algebra course with a grade of C or better
  • Earn college credit in an Intermediate Algebra course with a grade of C or better
  • For college credit earned through International Baccalaureate (IB) exams in Mathematics, please see the IB Credit Table

If none of the above applies to you, you will likely need to take the MPA.

 

Other Woodring Programs:

Students interested in Special Education and Early Childhood Education must take at minimum one teaching math course. Depending on what specific major you choose within those programs, you may need to take either 1) more teaching math courses to satisfy your particular major requirements within Special Education or Early Childhood Education or 2) additional math courses to completely satisfy your Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning GUR.

If you have done or will do any of the following, then you will likely not need to take the MPA for the purposes of fulfilling your program requirement:

  • Earn college credit in a Calculus course with a grade of C or better
  • Score a 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Calculus exam
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus II course with a grade of C or better
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus I course with a grade of C or better
  • Earn college credit in a College Algebra course with a grade of C or better
  • Earn college credit in an Intermediate Algebra course with a grade of C or better
  • For college credit earned through International Baccalaureate (IB) exams in Mathematics, please see the IB Credit Table

Students interested in Secondary Education should check the requirements for their endorsement area for math requirements. The Secondary Education teacher's certification program does not require math.
